Yesterday afternoon, the Miami Dolphins announced that they have officially made Ryan Tannehill their franchise quarterback by signing him to a 6 year, $96 million contract through the 2020 season with $45 million guaranteed. Let me repeat that– $96 MILION to a quarterback who has yet to lead his team to a playoff appearance in his three seasons. Don’t get me wrong, Tannehill’s 63 touchdown passes in three seasons is a good number, but not $96 million numbers, especially due to the fact that he has yet to taste playoff action. With his new contract, Tannehill is now the 6th highest paid quarterback in the NFL, ahead of Peyton Manning, Colin Kaepernick, Jay Cutler, and Tony Romo, two of which have played in a Super Bowl and the other two (Romo and Cutler) who have been to the playoffs multiple times and have had good numbers over the past few seasons. Last year Tannehill finished 11th in passing yards (4,045), 14th in quarterback rating (92.8), and 12th in touchdown passes (27). Tannehill is a good quarterback, but not elite. Let’s hope, for the Dolphins sake, that they know what their doing by giving him this large contract and that he can back up his new deal and lead this team to a playoff appearance.
