At the Brookvile Track Invitational on April 13, Samuel Hetrick jumped 6′ 7″ in the high jump, setting a new Redbank Valley record and matching the height of last year’s Pennsylvania high jump gold medalist, Darius Johnson from Valley High School in New Kensington.  If Hetrick keeps this up,  he could win a gold medal at states this year.

Do you like doing track why or why not?

“I love it. It’s a sport where everybody comes together to cheer everyone on and all types of people can do track  to throw, jump, or run.”

What was going through your head when you jumped 6′ 7″?

“I tried to just think about what I had to do to clear it. Keep my mind clear of how high it is and any distractions.”

Do you think you could jump higher than 6′ 7″ or do you think that is your max?

“I think I can get 6′ 8″ but it will be tough.”

In Pennsylvania, Matt Benson of Sheffield High School holds the record for high jump at 7′ 1″. This is like jumping over Shaquille O’Neal, a retired NBA player! Hetrick is a junior, so he still has next year to work on adding six inches to his personal best.

Hetrick could go to states and totally dominate.  I am sure if he does make it to states, everyone here in the school and community will be cheering him on.
